Joining their ranks are the enigmatic cold-blooded Lizardmen, the treacherously murderous Dark Elves, the pompously noble High Elves, and the ratlike ever-ravenous Skaven. So who has a stake in things this time? Well, all the Warhammer races you know and love/hate from the first entry are back in some form, though you can’t play as them just yet. Lustria and Naggarond (the Americas, in a sense) are joined by the Southlands, the Deadlands, and Ulthuan to form a ridiculously large campaign map that I’m still finding new parts of to explore after almost 30 hours. This installment focuses on the New World of the Warhammer Fantasy universe, building upon groundwork laid by the original WARHAMMER. Total War: WARHAMMER II (hereafter “Warhammer 2”) is the latest entry in the Total War series (big surprise there, huh?), a franchise based around managing vast campaigns and grand battles.

With that covered, let’s get into things. Whereas the first game was somewhat addictive to me, I found myself neglecting it a bit until the DLC came out in force With the sequel, I’ve skipped over quite a few self-imposed stopping points since it came out last Thursday. Let’s get this out of the way right now: If you don’t care about the specific races included in either game, Total War: WARHAMMER II is a straight-up better experience than its predecessor (which I already analyzed here).
